National Bed Month: Why it's Important to Have a Good Night's Sleep

National Bed Month, runs from 1st to 31st March was Launched by the sleep council, a charity which promotes the importance of getting a good nights sleep.

Here's the Bed Post's top tips on having a good night's sleep:

Getting consistent and unbroken sleep is crucial to your long term health and is a lot easier to achieve than you may think. Here are a few potential long term side effects of poor sleep, how it can negatively impact your life and what you can do to improve your sleep.

Tiredness & fatigue - This one is a given, if you have interrupted or reduced sleep you are going to feel more tired throughout the day which can affect your alertness, attentiveness, and ability to remember / carry out tasks.

Back & joint pain - Sleep is easily effected by having a damaged bed or having the incorrect style bed & mattress to support your weight, height and sleeping position. To get good sleep it is pivotal to choose the correct bed and supporting furniture to suit your needs. Sleeping uncomfortably and getting inconsistent sleep can cause / accelerate pains and aches all over the body. When you sleep the body goes through a recovery process. Getting good sleep helps the brain & body to engage in this recovery process more consistently which leads to improved physical and mental performance.

Stress - If the body doesn't get good enough sleep, the part of the body that handles cortisol production will not do its job correctly which can lead to increased stress the next day.

Making sure you pick the correct bed & mattress combination to improve your sleep can help you prevent increased stress and allow you to get more consistent sleep in the long term.

Long term issues - Having poor sleep regularly can lead to more serious issues. Many people that suffer with long term sleep issues like sleep deprivation say it often leads to higher blood pressure than normal, diabetes, and an increased risk of heart attack. Having the correct bed, mattress and bedding could help lower risks of suffering and improve your long term sleep.

The negative side effects associated with poor sleep shouldn't be overlooked, a large majority of us put up with symptoms of bad sleep that could possibly be remedied with a new mattress, bedding, pillows or frame.
